Safety & Security Action Plan

The Safety & Security Action Plan summarizes the steps Metro Transit is taking to improve public safety on transit. The plan identifies 40+ action items, focused on three areas of work:

  1. Improving conditions on the system
  2. Training and supporting employees
  3. Engaging customers and partners

Every action identified in the Safety & Security Action Plan is in progress. Recent highlights include:

  • The introduction of Transit Rider Investment Program (TRIP) Agents who are riding light rail vehicles to help customers feel more comfortable and to inspect fares. The team will be expanded as recruitment efforts continue through 2024.
  • An increased focus on cleaning and repair, including efforts to clean buses between trips at Brooklyn Center and Mall of America transit centers. Signs encouraging riders to report facility issues have also been posted at all light rail and bus rapid transit stations.
  • The installation of more visible decals that help light rail customers know what vehicle they’re on when reporting issues through Text for Safety and the expanded use of onboard monitors that show real-time security footage, reminding people on buses that cameras are in use.

How was the plan created?

The Safety & Security Action Plan is built from the recommendations of the Metropolitan Council’s Metro Transit Police Work Group and is based on significant feedback from customers and employees. The work group's recommendations are built around a vision that:

  • Provides a quality transit experience for all, using an anti-racist lens, equity lens, and an inclusive approach to transit safety, security, and policing.
  • Addresses systemic issues by fostering community relationships and partnerships.
  • Demonstrates responsive leadership and accountability for results.
