Two bus rapid transit (BRT) lines set ridership records in May, underscoring the growing demand for frequent and reliable service.
The METRO D Line and METRO Orange Line each had their highest monthly ridership totals ever in May. The METRO C Line also saw its highest monthly total since November 2019.
In all, more than 3.3 million rides have been taken on BRT lines through the end of May, accounting for 17% of the 19.7 million rides Metro Transit has provided so far this year. Systemwide, ridership is up 11% while ridership on BRT lines is up 25%.
“The continued success of our bus rapid transit lines shows that when we invest in frequent and reliable service, people respond,” General Manager Lesley Kandaras said.
On BRT routes, travel times are improved through a combination of off-board fare payment, all-door boarding, transit signal priority, transit lanes, and wider stop spacing. The rider experience is further improved through enhanced shelters with real-time departure information, lighting, on-demand heat and security features.
Three new BRT lines will open in 2025 – the METRO Gold Line, the METRO B Line and the METRO E Line. Construction on each of these projects is advancing on schedule.
Planning on four additional BRT lines is underway. Future BRT investments will be identified by the end of 2025.
With 12 BRT lines in service, 625,000 residents (20% of the regional population) will live within a half-mile of a BRT station. Many of these lines will intersect and connect to existing or planned light rail stations.
