Construction ahead: Efforts to build out, maintain transit network continue in 2025

Posted by Drew Kerr | Friday, April 18, 2025 8:28:00 AM

Riders encouraged to plan ahead as road construction, rail maintenance projects get underway

Construction related to two nearly completed bus rapid transit projects and the METRO Green Line Extension, along with planned light rail maintenance activities, will impact travel through the fall.

Additionally, more than two dozen routes will be detoured and/or operating on schedules that provide additional travel time due to road construction projects.

Riders are encouraged to plan ahead, leave themselves extra time, and to sign up for text and email alerts to stay informed of changes to routes and schedules. All are invited to subscribe to email newsletters that will be used to communicate updates about Metro Transit-led construction projects.

Metro Transit seeks to minimize impacts by coordinating construction with local partners and providing clear signage in construction areas.

The most notable Metro Transit-led construction projects to be aware of in 2025 are:

METRO Blue Line, Green Line

Buses will replace trains on several dates to allow for planned maintenance, including track replacement and upgrades to the signals and other equipment that guide train movements. During construction, replacement buses generally operate on a similar schedule as trains, stopping at or near all impacted light rail stations.

  • Wednesday, April 23, to Wednesday, May 14: Buses replace Blue Line trains between the Fort Snelling and Mall of America stations.
  • Friday, May 30, to Monday, June 2: Buses replace Green Line trains between the Raymond Avenue and Union Depot stations.
  • Friday, July 11, to Saturday, July 19: Buses replace Green Line trains between the Raymond Avenue and Union Depot stations.

Additional dates that will require buses to replace trains are being planned and will be announced when finalized.

METRO B Line

The finishing touches are being applied to the METRO B Line, opening on Saturday, June 14, including the installation of bus lanes on West Lake Street and Marshall Avenue. Lanes will be periodically closed this spring as red paint demarking the bus lanes is applied. When open, the B Line will provide bus rapid transit service along a corridor now served by Route 21, Metro Transit’s busiest local bus route.

METRO E Line

Entering its second year of construction, crews this year will build the remaining 20 stations that will be served by the METRO E Line when it opens on Saturday, Dec. 6. Several of the new stations are being built in coordination with road projects on Hennepin Avenue South and University Avenue Southeast. Routes 6 and 17 are already being detoured off a section of Hennepin Avenue South. During station construction, lanes may be closed as crews relocate utilities, pour concrete, and replace sections of sidewalk. Throughout the year, real-time signs and other amenities will also be added to E Line stations.

METRO Green Line Extension

Road and sidewalk construction is expected to cause local traffic impacts near the future West Lake and Royalston/Farmer’s Market stations in Minneapolis. Portions of Cedar Lake Parkway and Burnham Road will also be closed from May through the fall. Trail facilities that are currently closed are expected to re-open toward the end of the year.
