Customers encouraged to purchase fares using Go-To Cards, Metro Transit App

Metro Transit customers will resume boarding buses through the front door on Saturday, Aug. 1. Onboard fare collection will also resume on August 1.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, customers who can do so have been boarding through the rear door of regular route buses since late March. While onboard fare collection was suspended, riders were encouraged to purchase fares in advance.

To limit farebox interactions moving forward, riders are encouraged to use contactless fare payments, including Go-To Cards and the Metro Transit App. Go-To Cards can be purchased through Metro Transit’s website, at Metro Transit Service Centers or at any Cub Foods, Jerry’s Food or Unbank locations.

Customers who have not recently used their Go-To Card are reminded to check their balance and make sure their cards are active.

In anticipation of a return to front-door boarding, all in-service buses have been equipped with temporary shields or permanent barriers that help protect operators and customers. Customers who can do so should always exit out the rear door.

“Throughout the pandemic, we have always placed the safety of our riders and operators first,” General Manager Wes Kooistra said. "With the recent installation of protective shields and the requirement of face coverings, we continue to honor the principle of safety first."

In line with Gov. Tim Walz’s Executive Order, face coverings are required on all buses and trains.

Metro Transit continues to limit the number of passengers allowed on buses at one time, and all vehicles are being disinfected before going into service. To learn more about Metro Transit's response to COVID-19 visit metrotransit.org/health.
