Route 74

Better Bus Routes – Route 74

route 74 bus

Better Bus Routes is an initiative to improve your experience riding local bus routes by reducing stops, improving accessibility, and providing more shelters. These changes, both on and off the bus, will make your trip better, faster, and more reliable.

Route 74 provides service between 46th St. in south Minneapolis, Highland Park, and downtown St. Paul. Other key destinations include St. Catherine University, Metropolitan State University, and Sun Ray Transit Center.

Metro Transit is improving service on Route 74, effective Aug. 22. Changes include:

  • Consolidating bus stops for up to quarter-mile spacing to increase trip efficiency
  • Changes to simplify the route and add service where it's used most, including:
    • Restructuring the route east of Hazel St.
    • Discontinuing Route 74G, 74K, and 74S service. Alternate service is available on new Route 215 beginning in August 2026
      • Route 215 will travel between Sun Ray Transit Center and Maplewood Mall Transit Center via McKnight Road
    • All trips will start and end at Sun Ray Transit Center
    • Discontinuing service at Wilder Hi-Rise via Jefferson Ave. and Edgcumbe Rd. Alternate service is available on Route 83
  • Improving service to every 15 minutes during most of the day on weekdays and Saturdays
  • Expanding the no-parking zone around select stops to ensure buses can fully pull to the curb
  • Installing concrete pads to improve accessibility for customers
  • Installing new shelters at qualifying bus stops
  • School trips will continue between Sun Ray Transit Center and Johnson High School
