Safety
Our top priority is making sure you arrive safely to your destination. To ensure your safety, please keep these things in mind as you use the transit system.
Bus
- Never run after or alongside a moving bus. If a bus pulls away from a stop, play it safe and wait for the next one.
- As buses approach, wait on the sidewalk and away from the curb near the bus stop sign. If you are with a child, please hold their hand.
- To increase your visibility at night, consider wearing reflective clothing or carrying a small blinker light or flashlight.
- Do not cross the street in front of a bus unless it has stopped at a traffic light. Use caution and look both ways when walking past the front of the bus to cross a lane of traffic.
Light rail
- Pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers should only cross railroad tracks at designated crossings. Failure to obey traffic signals and walking along light rail tracks could cause serious injury or death and is against the law.
- Never go around lowered gates at rail track crossings. Trains have right of way over all other forms of transportation.
- Trains can come on any track, at any time, from either direction. Never assume you know when and where to expect a train and never try to beat a train through a crossing – it takes the length of two football fields for a train to stop.
- Never run after or alongside a moving train. If a train pulls away from a station, play it safe and wait for the next one.
- While waiting for the train, always stand behind the yellow line on the platform until the train has come to a complete stop.
- Skateboarding, rollerblading, and riding bikes on platforms is not permitted.
- While riding, please remain seated. If standing, hold onto the rails in case of sudden stops.
Northstar commuter rail
- In addition to the above, remember that freight trains traveling in the Northstar corridor do not stop and may not slow down at rail stations.
- To report an emergency on Northstar, please call 612-349-7115.
- Also: Northstar trains can operate in both directions, sometimes with a passenger car on the front end. White headlights indicate a train is coming toward you; red or no taillights mean a train is moving away from you.
What to do in an emergency
- In an emergency, immediately call or text 911. All light rail and bus rapid transit stations and light rail vehicles are also equipped with emergency call buttons.
- To report suspicious or unwanted behaviors, text 612-900-0411 and a Metro Transit representative will coordinate response. Learn more about using Text For Safety.
- If a vehicle is stuck on a Northstar track, call 1-800-832-5452, this number is also located on a blue sign at every crossing. Be prepared to provide the location, crossing number (if posted), and the name of the road or highway that crosses the tracks.
Listen up! Any time you are at a bus stop or rail station, it’s a good idea to remove your headphones and stay alert.
